Nazmul Hassan Papon (born 31 May 1961)[1] is a Bangladeshi politician and a cricket administrator. He is a formerMinister of Youth and Sports and a formerJatiya Sangsad member representing theKishoreganj-6 constituency.[2] He is also the former president of theBangladesh Cricket Board.[3]

Personal life

Nazmul Hassan Papon was born at the northBhairab River in the Bhairabpur area,Kishoreganj, Bangladesh.[citation needed] His father,Zillur Rahman, was the president of Bangladesh, and his mother isIvy Rahman, aBangladesh Awami League politician.[2] He has two sisters, Tania Bukth and Tonyma Rahman.[4][5] He was a former student of Government Laboratory High School, Dhaka. He completed his BSS from the Department of Public Administration, University of Dhaka and MBA from theInstitute of Business Administration, University of Dhaka.[2]

Nazmul Hassan was unanimously elected as the president of theBangladesh Cricket Board in October 2013, succeedingAHM Mustafa Kamal, who was appointed the vice president of theICC. He is the first elected president of the board, his predecessors being appointed by thegovernment of Bangladesh.[6] In the election, Papon competed with Saber Hasan Chowdhury.[7] In 2021, he was re-elected as the board president for a third term.[8] On 21 August 2024, He announced step down as president of theBangladesh Cricket Board.[9]

In 2018, Nazmul Hassan became the president of theAsian Cricket Council.[10] After a 3-year term, he was succeeded by BCCI SecretaryJay Shah in 2021.[11]

Nazmul Hassan was the member of parliament ofKishoreganj-6 constituency fromBangladesh Awami League since 2009 to 2024.[12]

Nazmul Hassan is the managing director ofBeximco Pharmaceutical Limited andShinepukur Ceramics Limited and a director ofBeximco Group. He was the president ofAbahani club for almost a decade.[2] He headed a subcommittee in the parliament formed to investigate the manufacturing practices of pharmaceutical companies in Bangladesh.[13]

Controversies

Nazmul Hassan has faced multiple controversies during his tenure as president of theBangladesh Cricket Board.[14][15] He has been criticized for his disciplinary actions against players, including the suspension of cricketerShakib Al Hasan.[16] Nazmul Hassan has also been accused of pressuring players to participate in matches despite their injuries and difficulties.[17]
