TheNational Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (DutchNationaal Coördinator Terrorismebestrijding en Veiligheid), abbreviated asNCTV, is the principal Dutchcounterterrorism agency. It was established in January 2005 as theNationaal Coördinator Terrorismebestrijding (NCTb). The unit was enlarged and renamed in October 2012.[1]

The NCTV is under the responsibility of theMinister of Justice and Security,David van Weel, who succeededDilan Yeşilgöz in 2024.[2] In charge ofcivil aviation andcybersecurity safety, it also analysesterrorism threats to determine the threat level (minimal, limited, substantial, or critical) in theNetherlands. The unit works closely with theGeneral Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) andMilitary Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD).[3][4]

History

The agency was involved in the investigation ofNorthwest Airlines Flight 253, which was an attempted in-flight bomb attack that occurred on 25 December 2009 and originated atLagos Airport.[5][6]

The head of the NCTV is appointed by theMinister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations after the approval of theCouncil of Ministers, as every senior civil servant is in the Netherlands. The following people have served as the National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism:
