Nathaniel 'Nat' Philip Victor James Rothschild, 5th Baron Rothschild (born 12 July 1971) is a financier andhereditary peer of the United Kingdom, who is a member of theRothschild banking family of England . Rothschild was born and grew up in England; he holds Canadian, Swiss andMontenegrin citizenship.
Rothschild became the 5thBaron Rothschild on the death ofhis father , on 26 February 2024.[ 4] [ 5]
Rothschild was born Nathaniel Philip Victor James Rothschild inPaddington , Greater London, England, on 12 July 1971,[citation needed ] as the youngest child and only son[ 6] toJacob Rothschild, 4th Baron Rothschild ,[ 7] a member of theRothschild banking family of England ,[ 8] and his wife,Serena Rothschild, Baroness Rothschild (née Dunn).[ 9] [ 10] He has three sisters:Hannah Rothschild (formerly[ 11] Brookfield),[ 12] [ 13] [ 14] Beth Matilda Rothschild (formerly Tomassini) and Emily Magda "Emmy" Freeman-Attwood[ 15] (née Rothschild).[ 16] [ 17]
Rothschild's mother came from aChristian background, while his father wasJewish . Rothschild's paternal grandfather,Victor Rothschild, 3rd Baron Rothschild , was born into a Jewish family, while his paternal grandmother, Barbara Judith Rothschild (née Hutchinson; 1911–1989),converted to Judaism upon marriage.[ 18] His maternal grandparents were Lady Mary Sybil St. Clair-Erskine, daughter ofJames St Clair-Erskine, 5th Earl of Rosslyn , andVera Mary St Clair-Erskine, Countess of Rosslyn , andSir Philip Gordon Dunn, 2nd Baronet , the only son of the Canadian financier and tycoon SirJames Hamet Dunn, 1st Baronet .
Rothschild attendedColet Court [ 19] (in the same year as the formerChancellor of the Exchequer ,[ 20] George Osborne ),[ 21] Eton College [ 22] and finallyWadham College, Oxford , where he studiedhistory , earning anupper second .[ 23] At Oxford, he was a member of theBullingdon Club , an exclusive and controversial drinking society[ 24] [ 25] as anundergraduate , at the same time as Osborne.[ 26]
He completed aMSc degree in Addiction Studies[ 27] at theInstitute of Psychiatry ,King's College London , in 2013.[ 28] He was elected as a foundation fellow of Wadham College, Oxford, in 2018.[ 29]
Rothschild joined the fund managerLazard after graduating,[ 30] and then went to work at Gleacher & Co., a corporate finance firm.[ 31] In 2000, he occupied a variety of positions, and holds a 50% stake in NR Atticus, Atticus Management andAtticus Capital , a hedge fund,[ 32] which in 2000, controlled funds approaching £312M.[ 33]
He is the former chairman of Vivarte, a pan-European retailer and owner of theKookai clothing brand. Appointed in 2000, following NR Atticus's acquisition of a 32.9% stake in what was widely regarded as the first hostileproxy fight inFrance , he led the group through its successful restructuring and subsequent sale toPAI Partners , a French private equity firm in 2004.[ 34]
He became an alternate director ofRIT Capital Partners plc in March 2000, and a full non-executive director in 2004 until 2010, when he stepped down from the RIT board. He remains a substantial direct shareholder of RIT and a 35% beneficial shareholder of Five Arrows Limited, a Rothschild holding company whose major asset is shares in RIT.[ 35] [ 36]
Rothschild is a former member of theBelfer Center 's International Council atHarvard 'sJohn F. Kennedy School of Government and the International Advisory Council of theBrookings Institution .[ 37] He was also a member of the International Advisory Board of theBarrick Gold Corporation until 2013.[ 38]
He has been the chairman of Volex plc, a UK-listed manufacturer, since November 2015.[ 39] [ 40] He has a wide range of international business interests.[ 41]
In March 2000,The Observer wrote that, in addition to Rothschild's then declaredinheritance of GB£ 500M , his actual inheritance was "hidden in a series of trusts inSwitzerland and rumoured to be worth GB£40bn ".[ 33] Via NR Investments Ltd., his principal investment company, he was a cornerstone investment in theUnited Company RUSAL initial public offering in January 2010.[ 42] At the same time, he boughtUS$ 40M ofGlencore bonds convertible into shares upon anIPO .[ 43] [ 44] [ 45]
NR Investments is also the largest shareholder (26.5% as of 2009) of Volex,[ 46] aManchester -based electrical cable maker.[ 47] Furthermore, he has an interest in various property developments inEastern Europe (Montenegro ,[ 48] Romania [ 49] andUkraine ).[ 50] In October 2023, Volex was targeted byhackers .[ 51]
In July 2010, Vallar plc, aJersey -incorporated investment vehicle he founded, raised GB£707.2M in an initial public offering on theLondon Stock Exchange . Vallar is led by Rothschild and James Campbell, a formerAnglo American plc coal andbase metals chief.[ 52]
In November 2010, Vallar announced it was buying stakes for US$3B in two listedIndonesia [ 53] thermal coal (used forpower stations ) producers for a combination of cash and new Vallar shares, with a view to combining them to create the largest exporter of thermal coal toChina ,India , and the other emerging economies ofAsia .[ 54] The transaction closed as planned on 8 April 2011[ 55] and Vallar plc was renamed Bumi plc in the same month.[ 56] [ 57] The deal was handled in a joint venture with the Bakrie[ 58] family[ 59] (43%) andRosan Roeslani (25%).[ 60] [ 61] In September 2012, the investigation of possible finance irregularities in its Indonesian arm resulted in a 14% fall in its share price.[ 62] [ 63] [ 64] In October 2012, Rothschild quit the firm's board.[ 65] [ 66] [ 67] In May 2013, the much-delayed financial results for 2012 showed a US$200Mblack hole .[ 68] It was also reported, that Roeslani, a former director of the company, had stolen US$173M from it.[ 69] [ 70] In December 2013, the company changed its name toAsia Resource Minerals .[ 71] In June 2015, following a series of disputes with his co-investors, he abandoned his investment in the company, selling his 17.2% stake to Coal Energy Ventures.[ 72] [ 73]
In June 2011, Rothschild andTony Hayward , the former chief executive ofBP plc, listed a successor vehicle to Vallar called Vallares on the London Stock Exchange, raising US$2.2B.[ 74] Essentially, this was identical in every respect to the first vehicle, which was metals and mining focused, except that the new entity would acquireoil andgas assets.[ 75] [ 76] In September 2011, Vallares announced a 50/50 all stock merger with Turkish Energy CampionGenel Energy , valued at US$4.2B.[ 77]
Rothschild announced that he would take a minority stake inLars Windhorst 's investment firm Tennor International and became the company's executive chair in July 2024.[ 78] In January 2025, he filed alawsuit against Windhorst, alleging default on a personal loan.[ 79] The next day, he said he was committed to his partnership with Windhorst, despite the ongoing lawsuit.[ 80] In August 2025, it was reported that Rothschild had settled with Windhorst. Rothschild was quoted as saying that he had never taken up the planned role of executive chairman and had never made an investment in Tennor.[ 81]
In October 2008 Rothschild was the subject of much press speculation when it was revealed thatLabour politician Peter Mandelson and the Russian aluminium tycoon,Oleg Deripaska (RUSAL ) had met when staying on ayacht moored nearCorfu ,[ 82] in order to attend a party held by Rothschild.[ 83] After speculation that this might constitute a conflict of interest for Mandelson,[ 84] Rothschild wrote a letter toThe Times newspaper alleging that another guest wasConservative [ 85] Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne , who, he said, illicitly tried to solicit adonation from theRussian for his party.[ 86] [ 87]
Rothschild has been linked toSaif al-Islam Gaddafi , the son of formerLibyan leader Muammar Gaddafi .[ 88] [ 89] [ 90] [ 91] [ 92]
In February 2012, Rothschild lost[ 93] hislibel case with theDaily Mail [ 94] [ 95] tabloid newspaper, who had accused him of being a "puppet master " in reporting about his foreign trips with Mandelson.[ 96]
In November 2020, amid theCOVID-19 pandemic , he was accused of refusing to help his clients.[ 97]
Rothschild and his then-girlfriend,Annabelle Neilson ,[ 98] a socialite and fashion model,[ 99] —the younger daughter to Maxwell Frederick "Max" Neilson, an investment and property advisor, and hisItalian noble wife,Marchesa Elizabetta Maria "Elizabeth" (née Campus [Di] Santinelli), an interior designer—eloped toLas Vegas , Nevada, on 13 November 1995. The couple had been in a relationship since 1991.[ 100] They first met on a beach inBali , Indonesia.[ 101] The couplelegally separated , at Neilson's request, in 1997, after less than two years of marriage, and their divorce was finalised in 1998, after less than three years of marriage.[ a] [ 102] [ 103] Neilson later told theDaily Mail : "Nat and I had been together for four years and I was 26 when I married him. He firstasked me to marry him half an hour after we met and then every day afterwards. Finally, we decided to do it."[ 104] In 2014, he said: "I find it bizarre that I'm still linked with someone I was involved with literally 20 years ago.[ 28] On 12 July 2018,[ 105] Rothschild's 47th birthday,[ 106] [ 107] his ex-wife died from aheart attack at her home inChelsea, London . She was 49.[ 108] He did not attend herfuneral , which took place atSt Paul's Church, Knightsbridge on 27 July 2018.[ 109] [ 110]
The Irish-bred British-trainedThoroughbred racehorse,Nathaniel (foaled 24 April 2008), winner of the 2011King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes , was bred and owned by his mother,[ 111] [ 112] and is named after Rothschild.[ 113]
Nathaniel atAscot before theChampion Stakes in 2012 Rothschild's personalwealth has often been documented byThe Sunday Times newspaper, making his solo debut to theirRich List in 2009,[ 114] when he was estimated to be worth GB£ 330M .[ 115] In 2008, along with his father, their combined wealth was estimated to be GB£1.4B . This was the only year his wealth was combined with a family member.[ 116] [ 117] In 2010, they estimated him to be worth GB£330M.[ 118] [ 119] [ 120] In 2011, he was estimated to be worth GB£1B,[ 121] [ 122] [ 123] making him abillionaire ,[ 124] [ 125] and was estimated to be worth the same in 2012.[ 126] He fell off the list in 2013, following a series of business issues,[ 127] with some sources reporting his worth to be estimated at GB£700M.[ 128] His fortune kept dropping[ 129] and in 2016, he was estimated to be worth GB£70M.[ 130] [ 131] [ 132] [ 133]
Rothschild gained aMontenegrin passport on the request of the thenPrime Minister of Montenegro ,Igor Luksic . He threw a three-day party inMontenegro in July 2011, to celebrate his 40th birthday. The party was rumoured to cost a millioneuros .[ 134] [ 135] [ 136] [ 137] [ 138]
He was in a relationship with the modelEliza Cummings from December 2012 to October 2014.[ 139] The former couple lived together.[ 140]
He often travels byprivate jet .[ 141] He owns his own £35Msuperyacht .[ 142]
Rothschild's four-storeytownhouse inNew York City 'sWest Village was put up for sale forUS$ 17.5M in April 2015.[ 143]
He married his second wife, Loretta Basey, a former glamour model who is best known for previously appearing onPage 3 ofThe Sun tabloid newspaper,[ 144] at a luxury Swissski resort inKlosters , Grisons, on 23 July 2016, having been engaged since December 2015. Basey is 19 years his junior. Their wedding party was held in Stowell Park, Wiltshire, a few weeks after their wedding.[ 145] His father-in-law is Phillip Victor Basey (born 1956),[ 146] a chartered accountant, who was one of the three-man team that createdUKIP 's2015 general election manifesto and was named as the treasurer of theBrexit Party in 2019.[ 147] The couple have settled inSwitzerland , with their dogs, and divide their time betweenLondon ,Los Angeles ,Florence ,Paris ,Moscow , New York City, andGreece .[ 148] [ 149] In June 2025, it was reported that the couple have a son.[ 150]
