Nasi goreng pattaya, or simplynasi pattaya, is aSoutheast Asianfried rice dish made by covering or wrappingchicken fried rice in thinfried egg oromelette. Despite its apparent reference to the city ofPattaya inThailand, the dish is believed to originate fromMalaysia, and today is also commonly found inSingapore. It is often served withchili sauce, tomatoketchup, slices ofcucumber, andkeropok.[4]
InIndonesia, this kind ofnasi goreng is often callednasi goreng amplop (enveloped fried rice), since thenasi goreng is enveloped within a pocket of thinomelette. However, due to proximity and neighbouring influences, today this kind of fried rice is often also callednasi goreng pattaya in Indonesia.[5][6] Today, the dish is popular throughoutSoutheast Asia, particularly in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.
The name is believed to be derived fromPattaya, a popular beach resort inThailand.[1][6] However, despite its Thai connotations, the dish is actually more common in Malaysia than in Thailand. The omelette-covered pattaya fried rice is hardly found in Pattaya itself.[3] It is most likely that the dish did originate in Malaysia,[1][2][7] and that the "Pattaya" moniker was probably used for novelty or marketing purposes.
A similar dish exists inJapan, and is calledomurice (from the English wordsomelette/omuretsu andrice).[1] It is a fried ketchup-flavoured ricesandwiched with a thinly spread beaten egg or covered with a plain egg omelette.
