Narendra Singh Tomar (born 12 June 1957;Hindi pronunciation:[n̪əɾeːn̪d̪ɾəsɪŋgʱt̪oːməɾ]) is an Indian politician and the speaker of theMadhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly since 2023.[1] He is the formerMinister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare. He has beenMinister of Rural Development,Minister of Panchayati Raj,Minister of Mines andMinister of Parliamentary Affairs in theGovernment of India during different periods of theFirst andSecond Modi ministry. He is a leader ofBharatiya Janata Party. He was also a member ofFifteenthLok Sabha from 2009 to 2014 fromMorena;SixteenthLok Sabha from 2014 to 2019 fromGwalior and17th Lok Sabha from 2019 to 2023 fromMorena.[2] In 2019, he changed his constituency and was re-elected to the Lok Sabha fromMorena.

Early life and education

Tomar was born on 12 June 1957 in Morar village inGwalior district (of Madhya Pradesh) in aRajput family to Munshi Singh Tomar and Sharda Devi Tomar. He graduated fromJiwaji University. He is married to Kiran Tomar, with whom he has two sons and a daughter.[2][3][4][5] He was nicknamed asMunna Bhaiya byBabulal Gaur.[6]

Political career

Tomar was appointed Union Cabinet Minister of Steel, Mines, Labour and Employment on 27 May 2014 in the cabinet headed by Narendra Modi. He was administered the oath of office and sworn in on 26 May 2014 by Pranab Mukherjee, the President of India.

On 5 July 2016, during the second cabinet reshuffle of theNarendra Modi ministry,Birender Singh replaced him as theSteel Minister and he replaced Birender Singh as the Minister ofPanchayati Raj,Rural Development andDrinking Water and Sanitation.[7]Piyush Goyal replaced Narendra Singh Tomar as theMinister of Mines (Minister of State with Independent charge).[7]

In May 2019, he continued with Ministry of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj and was given charge ofMinistry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.[8]

On 18 September 2020, Tomar was assigned the additional charge of theMinistry of Food Processing Industries afterHarsimrat Kaur Badal resigned from the post.[9]

In the2023 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly election, Tomar contesting forDimani defeatedBahujan Samaj Party's Balveer Singh Dandotiya by a margin of 24,000.[10]Arjun Munda succeeded Tomar as the Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in December 2023.[11]
