Napoléon is a 1955 Frenchhistoricalepic film written and directed bySacha Guitry, which depicts major events in the life ofNapoleon (Daniel Gélin as a young man,Raymond Pellegrin in later life; the switch takes place during a scene at a barber).

Guitry played the role ofTalleyrand, controversial diplomat and first Prime Minister of France, narrating from adrawing room as if having just heard of Napoleon's death on the island ofSaint Helena in 1821. The cast also featuresYves Montand asMarshal Lefebvre,Maria Schell asMarie-Louise of Austria,Erich von Stroheim asLudwig van Beethoven, andOrson Welles as Napoleon's British jailor, SirHudson Lowe.

TheEnglish dub was made as part of the original production, but is significantly shorter than the French version.

Plot

The film follows the life ofNapoleon from his early life inCorsica to his death atSaint Helena in May 1821. The film is notable for its use oflocation shooting for numerous scenes, especially at the French estates ofMalmaison andFontainebleau, thePalace of Versailles, and sites of Napoleonic battles includingAusterlitz andWaterloo.
