Nanae (七飯町,Nanae-chō) is atown located inOshima Subprefecture,Hokkaido,Japan. In April 2017, the town had an estimatedpopulation of 28,514, with 13,639households,[1] and apopulation density of 130/km2 (340/sq mi). The total area is 216.61 km2 (83.63 sq mi).

Geography

Nanae is at the southern end of theOshima Peninsula, about 16 km (9.9 mi) away fromHakodate.[2] The name of "Nanae" (七飯) is derived from two former villages, Nanae () and Iida ()

Hokkaidō Koma-ga-take (北海道駒ヶ岳,Hokkaidō Koma-ga-take), a 1,133 m (3,717 ft)stratovolcano, is the highest mountain in the town, located on the town's boundary withMori andShikabe.

Part of theŌnuma Quasi-National Park (大沼国定公園,Ōnuma Kokutei Kōen), including theŌnuma [ja] (大沼) and Konuma (小沼) ponds, is located within the town boundaries of Nanae.[3]

History

  • 1897: Nanae village and Iida village was merged to form Nanae village.[4]
  • 1902: Nanae village was merged with neighboring villages and became a Second Class Village.
  • 1957: Nanae village became Nanae town.

Nanae is served by theJR HokkaidoHakodate Main Line, which linksHakodate withSapporo andAsahikawa.

Formerly, Sawara Branch Line also ran through the town.Ikedaen,Nagareyama Onsen, andChōshiguchi station, three of the stations on the branch line, closed on 12 March 2022.[5]
