TheName of Mary Church (Serbian:Црква имена Маријиног,Crkva imena Marijinog;Croatian:Crkva Imena Marijina;Hungarian:Mária Neve katolikus templom) is aRoman Catholicparish church inNovi Sad,Serbia, dedicated to the feast of theHoly Name of Mary. It is the largest church in Novi Sad, and is located in the city centre on theTrg Slobode (Freedom Square). Locals refer to it as the "cathedral",[1] even though Novi Sad belongs to theRoman Catholic Diocese of Subotica, whose cathedral is located inSubotica.[1]
After the 1699Treaty of Karlowitz, Novi Sad became part of theHabsburg monarchy. The local Catholic parish was established in 1702, and the original church was built in 1719 on the same location as today's church.[1] It was dedicated toMary Help of Christians in the memory of theHoly League success in theBattle of Vienna. Later, it was renamed the Name of Mary Church. This original church was destroyed in 1742.[2] A new, second church was built on the same location.[2] CatholicArchbishop of Kalocsa Patacsich Gábordedicated this new church in 1742.[2] This, second church, was heavily damaged in the bombing during theHungarian Revolution of 1848 and its bell-tower was destroyed.[2] It was later partially reconstructed.[2]
In 1891, the city council made a decision to demolish the old church, and to build a new one on the same location.[2] Hungarian architect György Molnár designed the church in 1892 for free.[2] The old church was demolished the same year, and the new one started, with groundbreaking occurring on October 4th. The main construction was finished in November 1893.[2] The 72-metre bell-tower with the golden cross was finished in October 1894.[2]
In 1906, the roof of the church burned down due to a fire. It was quickly rebuilt by donations from local worshipers.[1]
The church is a three-nave building, withneo-Gothic arches. There are twentystained glasses depicting saints and church fathers. The church has mechanicalpipe organ with 24registers.[1]
The church has fouraltars. The main one in theapse is made of the carved wood fromTyrol, the windows with stained glass fromBudapest and the roof tiles were made ofZsolnay ceramics. The church has fourconfessionals and a marblebaptistry.[1] It is the third tallest church inBačka region after the Church of Saint Virgin Mary inBačka Topola and Church of Saint Stephan inSombor, dominating thecity center of Novi Sad.
Square of Violence is an American drama film shot in Novi Sad in 1961. The film is set in Italy during the Second World War, with major events shot at Freedom Square in Star Grad neighborhood. Several scenes would show the church from inside thecity hall.
