Nahuel Darío Martínez (born 10 February 1976) is an Argentinefootballcoach and former player who played as acentre-back. He is the current assistant coach of Brazilian clubSantos.

Playing career

Born inRosario, Martínez finished his formation withRiver Plate, but never managed to make a first team appearance for the club.[1][2] At the age of 21, he moved to Mexico and joinedReal San Luis, and subsequently played forGallos de Aguascalientes,Atlético Mexiquense andTigrillos Coapa in the country.[1]

In 2004, Martínez returned to his home country and joinedSportivo Belgrano. He subsequently played forArgentino de Rosario,[2] and moved to Ecuador in January 2006 withLDU Portoviejo,[3] but a seriousknee injury forced him into retirement.[1]

Managerial career

After retiring, Martínez started working atMitre de Pérez's youth sides, and eventually became the first team manager of the side.[1] He later worked as an assistant manager at Argentino de Rosario and Sportivo Belgrano before becoming the manager ofSarmiento de Leones [es] on 19 October 2012.[4]

On 29 October 2014, Martínez agreed to return to Sportivo Belgrano, now as manager.[5] He resigned the following 26 March,[6] and later joinedBelgrano as a manager of the youth sides.

On 8 December 2016, Martínez agreed to become the manager ofPeruvian Primera División sideAlianza Atlético for the upcoming season.[7] On 24 February 2017, however, he was sacked after just four matches.[8]

On 19 June 2017, Martínez was appointed at the helm ofSportivo Las Parejas.[9] He resigned in November of the following year,[10] and subsequently joinedJuan Pablo Vojvoda's staff atTalleres, as his assistant.

Martínez followed Vojvoda toHuracán,[11]Unión La Calera,Fortaleza[12] andSantos,[13] always under the same role.

Personal life

Martínez's sonLuca is also a footballer.[14] Aforward, he was born in Mexico and played for theirnational team.
