Nadira Babbar (born 20 January 1948) is anIndian theatre actress, director and an actress inHindi cinema, who is the recipient ofSangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2001. Nadira founded a Mumbai-based theatre group called Ekjute, a known name inHindi theatre in 1981.[1]

Nadira Babbar played mother toAishwarya Rai's character inGurinder Chadha'sBride and Prejudice (2004), andM. F. Hussain'sMeenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities (2004). She also portrayed the mother ofSalman Khan's character inSohail Khan'sJai Ho and the mother of Raj Bansal (main villain) inSunny Deol's 2016 movieGhayal Once Again.

Early life

The daughter ofSajjad Zaheer andRazia Sajjad Zaheer, she graduated fromNational School of Drama (NSD),New Delhi in 1971.[2] Nadira was a Gold Medallist at NSD and went to Germany on a scholarship, and later got a chance to work with renowned directors likeJerzy Grotowski andPeter Brook.[3]

Career

She started her theatre groupEkjute (Together) in 1981 in Delhi,[1] which came out with its first productionYahudi Ki Ladki in 1981, which revived theParsi theatre style, and is considered one of its finest.[4] The group has also been performing theBhavai-based musical,Jasma Odhan, written byShanta Gandhi for several years now.[5] Nadira moved toMumbai in 1988, and reestablished her theatre group.

Over the last 30 years, Ekjute has given Indian theatre over sixty plays includingSandhya Chhaya,Look Back in Anger,Ballabpur Ki Roop Katha,Baat Laat Ki Halaat Ki,Bharam Ke Bhoot,Shabash Anarkali andBegum Jaan; apart from directing plays written by herself:Dayashankar Ki Diary (1997),Sakku Bai (1999),Suman Aur Sana andJi Jaisi Aapki Marzi.[6][7] It has worked with actors likeRaj Babbar,Satish Kaushik andKirron Kher.[1]

In 1990, Ekjute started the 'Ekjute Young People's Theatre Group', which has given productions likeAao Picnic Challen andAzdak Ka Insaaf.[8] The groups celebrated 30 years of its foundation in 2011, with a week-long theatre festival,30 Years Caravan 2011, atPrithvi Theatres, Mumbai which began on 14 April 2011.[1][9][10] She also appeared inSalman Khan-starrer Hindi movieJai Ho (2014).

In 2016, she featured in Sunny Deol'sGhayal Once Again.[11]

Nadira Babbar was recently seen in the web series,The Married Woman, directed by Sahir Raza. The star cast also includesRidhi Dogra andMonica Dogra.[12]

Personal life

She is married to IndianHindi andPunjabi film actor and politicianRaj Babbar. ActorsArya Babbar andJuhi Babbar are their children. She is also step-mother to actorPrateik Babbar.
