NGC 540 is a barredlenticular galaxy in theconstellation Cetus. It is estimated to be 451 millionlight years from theMilky Way and has adiameter of approximately 120,000 light years.[citation needed] The object was discovered on October 15, 1885, by the AmericanastronomerFrancis Preserved Leavenworth.[4][5][6]
