NGC 2082 is abarred spiral galaxy located approximately 60 millionlight-years away[3] the constellationDorado. It was discovered November 30, 1834 byJohn Herschel.[4] The galaxy was originally considered to be part of theDorado Group of galaxies,[5] but was later removed from the list.[6] NGC 2082 is now considered a member of the nearbyNGC 1947 Group[7][8][9] which is part of theSouthern Supercluster.[8]

NGC 2082 is host to an irregularbulge[10] that is host to manystar forming regions that are interspersed with dust. It is thought that the star formation occurring in the center of the galaxy is the result ofgas inflow to the center.[11] Surrounding the center of NGC 2082, the spiral arms of the galaxy are irregular and reach close to the center.[12] The galaxy is host to anuclear star cluster with an estimated mass of 3 × 106M,[2] and asupermassive black hole with an estimated mass 6.2 × 106M.[13] It is also home to a population of 27 knownglobular clusters.[14]

Onesupernova has been observed in NGC 2082. SN 1992ba (Type II, mag. 14) was discovered byRobert Evans on 30 September 1992.[15][16]
