After attempts to host a Cup Series race at theCircuit Gilles Villeneuve failed,[2] NASCAR worked with Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez officials to host a Cup Series race in Mexico. On August 27, 2024, it was officially announced to be held on June 15, 2025, becoming the first points paying Cup Series race to be held outside the United States since1958.[3]Shane van Gisbergen was the winner of the event.
On July 30, 2025,The Athletic reported that NASCAR would not return to Mexico City in 2026, citing the scheduling challenge the June date presented due to Mexico City serving as a host city for the2026 FIFA World Cup.[4] The Athletic also reported that NASCAR attempted to find a different date in the 2026 schedule, but eventually decided to focus on finding the event a date on the 2027 schedule.
