TheN7 is anational route inSouth Africa that runs fromCape Town northwards through theWest Coast andNamaqualand regions to theNamibian border atVioolsdrif.[1] It is known as the Cape Namibia Road. After crossing the border, it changes designation toB1 and runs north throughWindhoek and the north ofNamibia.
The N7 national route forms the first section of theTripoli-Cape Town Highway, which is a proposed link betweenCape Town andTripoli, the capital city ofLibya, being developed by theUnited Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), theAfrican Development Bank (AfDB) and theAfrican Union.
The N7 begins at a four-way interchange with theN1 national route inCape Town, adjacent toAcacia Park andSummer Greens, heading northwards. South of this interchange, it is theM7 route of Cape Town (Jakes Gerwel Drive).[1]
The portion of the road withinCape Town is afreeway, but it loses limited-access freeway status shortly after exiting the urban limits at theM12 interchange (Malibongwe Drive). From here, it remains a dual-carriageway and gains limited-access freeway status again at theMelkbosstrand M19 interchange. It remains a limited-access freeway until just afterMalmesbury at theR45 intersection. Thereafter, the N7 is a single-carriageway highway with wide paved shoulders toPiekenierskloof Pass and through theOlifants River valley untilClanwilliam.[1]
The rest of the N7 to theNamibian border, throughVredendal andSpringbok (where it meets theN14 national route) is a single-carriageway highway with no paved shoulders.[1]
After crossing into Namibia, it becomes theB1 road toKeetmanshoop andWindhoek.
