TheMuseum of Ancient Seafaring (German:Museum für antike Schifffahrt) was installed inMainz in 1994 in the former central covered market (before railway repair shop of theHessian Ludwig Railway) near the South Station, nowadaysMainz Römisches Theater station, as a branch of theRomano-Germanic Central Museum (Mainz).[1] The new archaeological center is built right beside the current museum building.[2][3][4] A workshop is affiliated to the museum, where visitors have the opportunity to watch the staff replicate ancient ship models.
Due to the fact that in 1981/82 during construction works near theRhine river well-preserved remains of several ships fromLate Antiquity, the so saidMainzer Roman ships were discovered, an adequate exhibition space for these was required. There were discovered two different types of warship of lateRoman Rhine fleet ″Classis Germanica″ and other ship types.
