TheMuseo del Novecento ("museum of the twentieth century") is a museum oftwentieth-century art inMilan, inLombardy in northern Italy. It is housed in thePalazzo dell'Arengario, nearPiazza del Duomo in the centre of the city.
The museum opened in December 2010. It displays about 400 works, most of them Italian, from the twentieth century.[1]
Apart from a single room housing works by foreign artists includingBraque,Kandinsky,Klee,Léger,Matisse,Mondrian andPicasso, the majority of the works exhibited in the museum are by Italian artists.[1] A significant section highlightsItalian Futurists, showcasing works byGiacomo Balla,Umberto Boccioni,Carlo Carrà,Fortunato Depero,Luigi Russolo,Gino Severini,Mario Sironi andArdengo Soffici.Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo's large canvasIl Quarto Stato (1902) was exhibited in a room on its own,[1] until 2022.
Other sections of the museum are dedicated to individual artists such asGiorgio de Chirico,Lucio Fontana andMorandi. There are also sections devoted toart movements of the twentieth century, includingAbstractionism,Arte Povera, theNovecento Italiano,Post-Impressionism andRealism, and to genres such aslandscape and monumental art.[1]
In 2015 the museum received a large donation from private collectors Bianca and Mario Bertolini of contemporary art works by artists such asDaniel Buren,Joseph Kosuth,Roy Lichtenstein,Robert Rauschenberg,Frank Stella andAndy Warhol.[2]
The museum has a bookshop, and a restaurant-bar on the top floor, overlooking Piazza del Duomo.[1]
