It is part of the traditional region ofLower Carniola and is now included in theSoutheast Slovenia Statistical Region. The municipal administration is based in the settlement ofHrib–Loški Potok. Traditionallyforestry provided the main income for local inhabitants and it still plays an important role.[2] It bordersCroatia.
The nameLoški Potok was originally a hydronym, derived from the adjective form oflog '(swampy) meadow' +potok 'stream', thus literally meaning 'stream in a (swampy) meadow'. This probably refers to the level area south ofTravnik, where there is a creek with the same name. The name was attested in written sources asLaserbach,Loserbach, andLasserbach in 1763–1787.[3] In the past, the German equivalent of the name wasLaserbach.[4] The surroundingPotok Plateau (Slovene:Potočanska planota) is also named afterLoški potok.[5]

In addition to the municipal seat of Hrib–Loški Potok, the municipality also includes the following settlements:
