TheMunicipality of Cerkno (Slovene:Občina Cerkno) is amunicipality in theLittoral region ofSlovenia.[2]The seat of the municipality is the town ofCerkno. The municipality has around 5,000 people.
Historically, theCerkno Hills belonged toTolmin County. In the 16th century, the area came underHabsburg rule, and was included in theCounty of Gorizia and Gradisca. After the end ofWorld War I, the area was occupied by theItalian Army, and then officially annexed toItaly in 1920. Between 1920 and 1943, it was part of the administrative region known as theJulian March. After theItalian armistice in September 1943, Cerkno was liberated by theYugoslav Partisans and the region became one of the most important centres ofPartisan resistance in theSlovenian Littoral. In 1945, the area came under Yugoslav military administration, and in 1947 it was officially annexed to thePeople's Republic of Slovenia within theFederal People's Republic of Yugoslavia.
