Muhammad Naeem (1958 – 20 June 2020) was aPakistaniIslamic scholar who served as Chancellor ofJamia Binoria.[1][2][3][4][5]

He founded theDeobandi seminaryJamia Binoria and was executive member ofWifaq ul Madaris Al-Arabia, Pakistan.[6][7]

He played a significant role in shaping 'Paigham-e-Pakistan' – a historicfatwa againstterrorism and had also spoken out againstsuicide bombings andterrorism in Pakistan.[8]

His paternal family came fromSurat in IndianGujarat.[8] His grandfather was born aParsi who adopted Islam.[8] He was born in 1958.[9]

He is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters.[6] Earlier in 2014, his son-in-law, Masood Beg, was killed in an attack[10] in Karachi.

Death and legacy

He died in Karachi on 20 June 2020 because of a heart attack.[6][11] HoweverChief Minister SindhMurad Ali Shah revealed in a speech atSindh Assembly that Mufti Naeem,Talib Jauhri andMunawar Hasan, all of the three clerics who died in past week were due toCOVID-19 during theCOVID-19 pandemic in Pakistan.[12]

His funeral prayer was led byTaqi Usmani. The funeral was attended by scholars likeMuhammad Hanif Jalandhari, Hakeem Azhar ofAshraf ul Madaris, Taqi Usmani's son Muhammad Imran Ashraf Usmani ofJamia Darul Uloom, Karachi, Merajul Huda Siddiqui,Saeed Ahmad Afridi and his students.[13] Prime Minister of PakistanImran Khan, PresidentArif Alvi, Governor of SindhImran Ismail and the Chief Minister of SindhSyed Murad Ali Shah expressed sadness over his death.[14]
