Tlokoeng, formallyMount Fletcher,[2] is a town inJoe Gqabi District Municipality in theEastern Cape province ofSouth Africa, 69 km north-north-east ofMaclear. It is a birthplace of both political activitiesEpainette Mbeki andOscar Mpetha.
Founded in 1882, Mount Fletcher takes its name from the mountain nearby. This was probably named after the ReverendJohn Fletcher ofMadeley in England, a friend ofJohn Wesley, although it is stated to have been named after a Captain Fletcher who was stationed there.[3]
In 2022, the town was officially renamedTlokoeng, which "means place of theTlokoa clan" in Sesotho.[4] The provincial hospital in Tlokoeng is namedTayler Bequest.[5]
