Mouni Roy (Bengali pronunciation:[mou̯nirae̯]; born 28 September 1985) is an Indian actress who primarily works inHindi television and films. One of the highest-paidtelevision actresses in India,[1][2] Roy is widely known for her portrayal of a shape-shifting snake in the supernatural thriller seriesNaagin (2015–2016) and its sequelNaagin 2 (2016–2017).[3] She is a recipient of several awards, including anIIFA Award and twoITA Awards, as well as nominations for twoFilmfare Awards.[4][5]

Roy started her acting career in 2006 with the television showKyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.[6] She then portrayedSati inDevon Ke Dev...Mahadev and Meera inJunoon – Aisi Nafrat Toh Kaisa Ishq. Roy made her film debut with the Punjabi romantic film,Hero Hitler in Love (2011). She made her Hindi film debut with the 2018 period sport film,Gold, receiving nomination for theFilmfare Award for Best Female Debut. In 2022, Roy received praise for the fantasy filmBrahmāstra: Part One – Shiva, which earned her theIIFA Award for Best Supporting Actress and a nomination for theFilmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.[7]

Early life and education

Roy was born inCooch Behar,West Bengal[4] on 28 September 1985,[5][3][8] into aBengali[9] speakingRajbongshi family.[10] Her grandfather, Shekhar Chandra Roy, was a well-known Jatra theatre artist.[11] Her mother Mukti was a theatre artist, and her father Anil Roy was an office superintendent of the Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad, based in Bangchatra Road, Cooch Behar.[4] She studied atKendriya Vidyalaya in Baburhat until 12th class, and went toDelhi afterwards.[4][12]

She completed her graduation fromMiranda House[13] and studied mass communication atJamia Milia Islamia at her parents' insistence, but left the course midway and went toMumbai to try her luck in the Hindi film industry.[14] She finished her Part 1 exams and did not return to Delhi after that.[14][failed verification] Mouni was interested in acting since childhood and has cited actressesMadhubala,Madhuri Dixit andWaheeda Rehman as her acting idols.[15][16]

Career

Debut and initial career (2006–2010)

Roy started her career with theEkta Kapoor dramaKyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi in 2006, portraying Krishna Tulsi oppositePulkit Samrat andAkashdeep Saigal.[17][18] She then participated in, and won, the first season of dancing competition showZara Nachke Dikha.[19] Then, she portrayed Shivani Sabharwal inKasturi.[20] In 2008, she participated inPati Patni Aur Woh.[21] In 2010, Roy played Roop inDo Saheliyaan opposite Jatin Shah.[22]

Established television actress (2011–2017)

In 2011, Roy starred in thePunjabi filmHero Hitler in Love. She attained fame after portrayingSati inLife OK's mythological seriesDevon Ke Dev...Mahadev, oppositeMohit Raina, from 2011 to 2014.[23][24] In 2013, she played the lead as Meera, oppositeAditya Redij, inLife OK'sJunoon – Aisi Nafrat Toh Kaisa Ishq.[25] In 2014, Roy participated in the dance reality showJhalak Dikhhla Jaa 7 along with Punit Pathak, and she finished in fourth place.[26]

In 2015, Roy returned to television withEkta Kapoor's supernatural seriesNaagin, portraying Shivanya oppositeArjun Bijlani. The series topped the TRP charts, making her a household name not only in India but in other countries as well.[27][28] She became one of the players on Bijlani's team the Mumbai Tigers inBox Cricket League. She hosted the dance showSo You Think You Can Dance on&TV.

In 2017, Roy portrayed a dual role in the second season ofNaagin, oppositeKaranvir Bohra. Her chemistry with Bijlani in season 1, and with Bohra in season 2, was highly appreciated by audiences, and established her as a leading actress in Indian television.[29][30] In 2016, Roy voiced the role ofSita in the animated filmMahayoddha Rama.[31] In the same year, she appeared in the song "Nachna Aunda Ni" inTum Bin 2.[32]

Return to Hindi cinema and progression (2018–2022)

Roy made her full-fledgedHindi film debut alongsideAkshay Kumar as a housewife inReema Kagti's 2018 period sports filmGold, anExcel Entertainment production revolving around India's struggle for recognition in the Hockey Olympics.[33] Jyoti Sharma Bawa ofHindustan Times noted, "Roy as Akshay's wife Monobina is just the right mixture of crotchety and charming. With her grasp of Bengali, she brings that extra something to the film's milieu."[34] Devesh Sharma ofFilmfare stated: "Mouni infuses the film with a dash of sensuality and her stern wife's role adds a bit of a comic touch as well."[35] With global earnings of1.5 billion,Gold emerged as a commercial success.[36] Roy followed the success ofGold with anitem number called "Gali Gali" in the Hindi version ofK.G.F: Chapter 1, presented byGold producersRitesh Sidhwani andFarhan Akhtar.[37]

Roy in 2020

In 2019, Roy made a cameo appearance in the final few episodes ofNaagin 3 as Mahanaagrani Shivangi.[38] Roy's first release in 2019 wasRomeo Akbar Walter alongsideJohn Abraham andJackie Shroff. For her performance as a RAW agent,Bollywood Hungama wrote, "Mouni Roy has an interesting part to essay. Though she does well, her character gets a raw deal."[39]Romeo Akbar Walter underperformed at the box office.[40] In her next film the same year,Made in China, Roy played a disturbed housewife alongsideRajkummar Rao.[41] Vibha Maru noted: "Mouni is a surprise package. Though given a small role, she comes with much power, owning every bit of the screen time she gets."[42]Made in China proved to be a modest commercial success.[43]

Roy played a pregnant RAW agent in her first OTT feature film,London Confidential.[44] Joginder Tuteja fromRediff.com stated, "Mouni Roy shows conviction in playing her part and is in a different avatar from her earlier performances."[45] In 2021, she played an actress inVelle alongsideAbhay Deol. Hiren Kotwani ofTimes of India wrote, "Mouni has limited scope to perform. Nonetheless, she lights up the screen every time she appears in the film."[46] Roy appeared as the judge inDance India Dance Li'l Masters 5 in 2022.[47]

The same year, Roy played the main antagonist Junoon inBrahmāstra: Part One – Shiva.[48][49] Roy received rave reviews from critics and audience alike. Tushar Joshi ofIndia Today noted, "Roy as the villain is terrific and breaks theNaagin stigma with this career-altering performance."[50] Prateek Sur fromNews18 wrote, "The real find of the film, Roy is simply terrific and really holds herself in this elaborate cast and effortlessly shines as the nemesis."[51] The film became thehighest-grossing Hindi film of 2022. Her performance in the film earned her theIIFA Award for Best Supporting Actress and a nomination for theFilmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.[52]

Further work and streaming projects (2023-present)

In 2023, Roy made her web debut withMilan Luthria'sSultan of Delhi oppositeTahir Raj Bhasin and Anjum Sharma. She played a cabaret dancer, Nayanthara in the series.[53][54]Saibal Chatterjee stated that the script doesn't allow her to perform.[55]

In her first release of 2024, Roy played Yasmine Ali, an actress oppositeEmraan Hashmi in the seriesShowtime.[56] Writing forHindustan Times, Devansh Sharma stated, "Mouni does get some moments to shine, especially a close-up shot where reel life echoes the real, but her arc is strictly work-in-progress."[57] Later the year, she appeared as a TV host inLove Sex Aur Dhokha 2.[58] Ganesh Aaglave ofFirstpost was appreciative of her cameo.[59] She then played Shruti, a woman-on-the-run alongsideVikrant Massey inBlackout.[60] The film received negative reviews andSukanya Verma opined that Roy's character was "reduced to chumps".[61]

In 2025, Roy first played a ghost inThe Bhootnii oppositeSunny Singh.[62][63] Rishabh Suri stated that she "fares well" in her role due to her experience with such supernatural roles.[64] Following this, she played an Indian undercover agent in Pakistan in the seriesSalakaar alongsideNaveen Kasturia.[65] Vinamra Mathur was appreciative of her "nuanced character" and performance.[66]

Personal life

Mouni Roy has been awarded theUAEGolden Visa, attributed to her frequent visits to the country.[67] On 27 January 2022, she marriedDubai-based Malayali businessman Suraj Nambiar in traditional Bengali and Malayali ceremonies inPanaji,Goa, following a three-year relationship.[68][69]

Roy has established herself as one of the most prominent television actresses in India.[70][71]Times of India labeledNaagin a "game-changer" for Roy.[72] After the release ofBrahmāstra: Part One – Shiva, Mayukh Majumdar ofFilmfare termed her "the undisputed star of the film".[73]Financial Express stated that Roy's Junoon will be the "best antagonist Bollywood has seen in a while".[74] Roy has frequently featured on Times of India's "50 Most Desirable Women" list. She ranked 35th in 2017, 32nd in 2018,[75] 41st in 2019 and 44th in 2020.[76] She placed 3rd in the same publication's "20 Most Desirable Women on TV" list in 2017.[77] In 2018, same publication also ranked her 4th in theTop 10 Popular Actress in Television.[78] In 2023, she ranked 8th inTimes Now "Popular Actresses" list.[79]

Roy is a prominent celebrity endorser for brands and products including Bryan & Candy,Joy and Spawake.[80][81][82] In March 2023, Roy performed in various cities in the United States for "The Entertainers" tour,[83] alongsideAkshay Kumar,Disha Patani,Nora Fatehi,Sonam Bajwa,Aparshakti Khurana,Stebin Ben andZahrah S Khan.[84] Roy also supports a number of social causes. During theCOVID-19 crisis, she donated a sum for people in need.[85] In 2020, after thecyclone Amphan, she joined with an NGO and auctioned her paintings in order to raise funds for victims.[86] Roy also donated to theIskcon Foundation for medical facilities inMayapur in 2021.[87] Roy and her husband Suraj Nambiar launched "Ultimate Gurus", a global education platform, in 2022.[88] In May 2023, Roy opened a restaurant named "Badmaash" in Mumbai.[89] Roy is themost-followed Indian television actresses in Instagram.[90]
