Mostene (Μοστήνη), also calledMosteni orMostenoi (Μοστηνοί), orMostina (Μόστινα), orMustene orMoustene (Μουστήνη), is aRoman andByzantine era city in theHyrcanian plain ofancient Lydia.[1] The townminted its own coin of which many examples exist today.[2] In 17 CE the city was hit by anearthquake[3] and was assisted with relief fromTiberius.

There is debate, based on a line inTacitus,[4] over whether Mostene was aMacedonian Colony. Cranmer[5] argues for the Macedonian ethnos while Getzel M. Cohen[6] argues for a native Lydian population.

Its site is tentatively located nearSancaklıbozköy inAsiatic Turkey.[7][8]

Mostene was also the site of aBishopric. The diocese belonged to theecclesiastical province ofSardis and remains atitular see of theRoman Catholic Church to this day .[9] Thediocese wassuffragan of theecclesiastical province of Sardis underPatriarchate of Constantinople.
