Morris William Hirsch (born June 28, 1933) is an Americanmathematician, formerly at theUniversity of California, Berkeley.

A native ofChicago, Illinois, Hirsch attained hisdoctorate from theUniversity of Chicago in 1958, under supervision ofEdwin Spanier andStephen Smale.[1] His thesis was entitledImmersions of Manifolds. In 2012, he became a fellow of theAmerican Mathematical Society.[2]

Hirsch had 23 doctoral students, includingWilliam Thurston,William Goldman, andMary Lou Zeeman.
