Montcalm (French pronunciation:[mɔ̃kalm]) is a federalelectoral district inQuebec,Canada, which has been represented in theHouse of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1917 and since 2004.

In the 2004 election, theBloc Québécois won a larger percentage of the vote than in any other riding, with 71% of the vote. It held the seat until 2011, when it was defeated by the NDP.

Geography

The riding is located to the northeast of theMontreal region, in the Quebec region ofLanaudière. It consists of theMontcalm RCM, the city ofMascouche, and the districts of La Plaine and Lachenaie in the city ofTerrebonne.

The neighbouring ridings areJoliette,Repentigny,La Pointe-de-l'Île,Honoré-Mercier,Alfred-Pellan,Terrebonne, andRivière-du-Nord.

Demographics

According to the2021 Canadian census[2]

Ethnic groups: 92.4% White, 3.0% Black, 1.8% Indigenous, 1.0% Latin American

Languages: 92.8% French, 1.8% English, 1.0% Spanish

Religions: 66.8% Christian (59.4% Catholic, 7.4% Other), 1.2% Muslim, 31.6% none

Median income: $42,400 (2020)

Average income: $48,640 (2020)

History

Montcalm riding was created by theBritish North America Act 1867. It was abolished in 1914 when it was merged intoL'Assomption—Montcalm riding.

It was re-created in 2003 from parts of the ridings ofBerthier—Montcalm,Repentigny, andTerrebonne—Blainville.

This riding lost territory toTerrebonne and gained some territory from Repentigny during the2012 electoral redistribution.

Following the2022 Canadian federal electoral redistribution, it lostSaint-Calixte toLes Pays-d'en-Haut.
