Montaione is acomune (municipality) in theMetropolitan City of Florence in theItalian regionTuscany, located about 35 kilometres (22 mi) southwest ofFlorence. It is one ofI Borghi più belli d'Italia ("The most beautiful villages of Italy").[3]

Thefrazione ofFilicaja was the starting point of Antonioda Filicaja for the invasion ofPisa by theFlorentine army in 1509.

Archaeology

In 2024, a small marble statue ofHercules, nicknamed "Ercolino da Montaione" and dating to the 3rd–4th centuries AD, was discovered on a nearby hill at the site of an ancientRoman residence.[5][6]
