Monasteraden (Irish:Mainistir Réadáin, meaning 'Redan's monastery')[1] is a village inCounty Sligo,Ireland. The village is located on the shores ofLough Gara. St. Aiden's church is the village's church.
Monasteraden lies to the west ofLough Gara and with theCurlew Mountainsinlier ofsandstones andconglomerates to the North.[2] To the west lies the townland of Clogher with Edmondstown andBallaghaderreen in the neighbouringCounty Roscommon.
Monasteraden is situated in thebarony of Coolavin in the south ofCounty Sligo.[3]

There is a holy well called St.Attractas and that is where many people used to get theirdrinkingwater.[4] The lake is used for fishing for thebrown trout and is divided by the bridge atClooncunny.[5]
Island Road railway station served Monasteraden and used to have many trains passing by on theBallaghaderreen branch line with connections toDublin but that was closed in 1963 and the station building is a private home.[6] The nearest railway station is nowBoyle, some 10 miles (16 km) away.
There is a national school, St. Aiden's, in Monasteraden. They have been particularly noted for their work with film, including producing a 32-minute movie entitled "The Train" bringing together rare footage and interviews with local people associated with theBallaghaderreen branch line, which had a station serving their village.[7]
