Monaghan was aparliamentary constituency represented inDáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament orOireachtas from 1921 to 1977. The constituency elected 3 deputies (Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs) to the Dáil, on the system ofproportional representation by means of thesingle transferable vote (PR-STV).

History

The constituency was created in 1921 as a 3-seat constituency, under theGovernment of Ireland Act 1920, for the1921 election to theHouse of Commons of Southern Ireland, whose members formed the2nd Dáil.

It succeeded the constituencies ofMonaghan North andMonaghan South which were used to elect theMembers of the 1st Dáil and earlierBritish House of Commons members.

It was abolished under theElectoral (Amendment) Act 1974, when it was replaced by the new constituency ofCavan–Monaghan which was first used at the1977 general election.

Boundaries

The constituency spanned the entire area of theCounty Monaghan.[1]

Following the election ofFianna Fáil TDErskine H. Childers asPresident of Ireland, a by-election was held on 27 November 1973. The seat was won by theFine Gael candidate Brendan Toal.
