Inlinguistics, themodal case (abbreviatedMOD) is agrammatical case used to express ability, intention, necessity, obligation, permission, possibility, etc. It takes the place of Englishmodal verbs such as can, could, would, might, may.

This case is only used in theKayardild andLardil languages,[1] two of theTangkic languages of northernAustralia.
