TheMississippi map turtle (Graptemys pseudogeographica kohnii), also knowncommonly asKohn's map turtle,[3] is asubspecies of land and water turtle belonging to thefamilyEmydidae.G. p. kohnii is native to the central United States.
The common name, Mississippi map turtle, derives not from the state ofMississippi, but rather from theMississippi River.[citation needed]
Thespecific name,kohnii, is in honor of amateurnaturalist Joseph Gustave Kohn (1837–1906) ofNew Orleans,Louisiana, who collected thetype specimen.[4][3]
G. p. kohnii is found along the Mississippi River and its tributaries, fromIllinois andMissouri southward.[citation needed]
The graycarapace ofG. p. kohnii is covered in yellow lines which resemble contour lines of a map.[citation needed]
