Miriam Rose Silverman (born January 19, 1977) is an American actress. After studying acting atBrown University, she started her professional career on stage in numerousoff-Broadway productions includingThe Public Theater's production ofHamlet in 2008. In 2013, she was nominated for theDrama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Play for her performance as Natalie inFinks by Joe Gilford.[2] She made herBroadway debut in theAyad Akhtar playJunk in 2017. She returned to Broadway in the 2023 revival of theLorraine Hansberry playThe Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window portraying Mavis Parodus Bryson for which she won theTony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play.
She is also known for her recurring role as Bernice in theAmazon seriesThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and her performances inHulu'sFleishman Is in Trouble (2022) and Amazon'sDead Ringers (2023). She is an acting coach, and currently a theatre professor atNYU Tisch School of the Arts.[3]
Silverman was born and raised in New York City inManhattan, the daughter of Anita (née Palm 1942–2023).[4] and Michael Silverman. During her mother's pregnancy, Anita was featured on a special segment ofGood Morning America documenting Miriam's birth.[5]
She has two brothers, Joseph and Jeffrey. Her mother was a teacher and her father is a journalist and former managing editor of theAssociated Press.[6] She attendedBronx High School of Science graduating in 1996. Her interest in acting started at a young age, with her parents taking her to see Broadway shows. She played Rizzo in a school production ofGrease and played soccer. She auditioned forLaGuardia High School For The Performing Arts and was accepted, however she turned down the offer and enrolled at Bronx Science, taking the subway from Manhattan.[7][8]
Silverman graduated fromBrown University with a B.A. in Literature andSoutheast Asian studies in 2001 and completed aMaster of Fine Arts in Acting in 2005. Her first acting role at Brown was Lady Croom inTom Stoppard'sArcadia. She worked at theBrooklyn Botanic Garden between college semesters.
She took agap year as an undergraduate to teach English inHong Kong.[9] In 2012, through a fellowship withTheatre Communications Group, she moved to London to train at theLondon Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and theRoyal Shakespeare Company.[10]
In 2002 she performed in the musicalHot Star, Nebraska at Speakeasy Stage in Boston.[11] In 2008 she performed in a production ofHamlet at theDelacorte Theater. In 2010, she was nominated for aHelen Hayes Award for her performance inThe Dog in the Manger with theShakespeare Theatre Company, where Silverman is a repertory member actor. Silverman is also a repertory member actor forTrinity Repertory Company.[12] She has performed several plays insummerstock in theBerkshires with companys like Berkshire on Stage and the Berkshire Playwrights Lab.[13]
She was nominated for aJeff Award in 2016 for her performance as the lead female character's older sister Mavis Parodus Bryson in theGoodman Theatre's production ofLorraine Hansberry'sThe Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window. She reprised this role in the New York productions at theBrooklyn Academy of Music and then on Broadway in April 2023 at theJames Earl Jones Theatre.[14] For her performance in the Broadway production, she won theTony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play.
She made her Broadway debut in 2017 as Amy inAyad Akhtar'sJunk at theVivian Beaumont Theater.[15] Her television appearances including episodes ofFleishman Is in Trouble andThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. She appeared in the filmBreaking which premiered at the 2022Sundance Film Festival. In 2023, Silverman was cast in her first leading film role inMotherland produced byMoving Picture Institute.[16]
She married actor Adam Green in 2009. The couple met performingAwake and Sing! at theArena Stage, directed byZelda Fichandler.[17] Green, aHarvard graduate, works as the East CoastUnion organizer forSAG-AFTRA.[18] The couple lobbied for theActors' Equity Fair Wage on Stage movement.[19] She isJewish[20] and a member of the Plaza Jewish Community Chapel.[21]
