Miranda Dear is an Australian film producer, who worked withDarren Dale atBlackfella Films for ten years. She is especially known for many acclaimed TV series, includingRedfern Now andTotal Control.

Miranda Dear was born inLondon, England.[1]

Career

Miranda Dear started her film career in the UK at public broadcasterChannel 4, initially in music and arts, then becoming a senior film buyer in the acquisitions unit.[2] She then became production and acquisition consultant forFilm Four[3][4][5] in Australia[6] around 1996. Film Four had partnered withShowtime Australia in its first foreign co-financing venture, and during this time the collaboration producedJohn Polson'sSiam Sunset and Mark Lamprell'sMy Mother Frank.[7]

Dear left Film Four in July 2000,[7] to became commissioning editor of drama atSBS independent (the production arm of public broadcasterSBS) inSydney, Australia,[3][5][4] after which Film Four closed its Australian office.[7] During her time at SBSi, it became an important brand, notable for series such asThe Circuit andRAN.[5] She commissioned feature drama films such asLook Both Ways,Ten Canoes, andThe Tracker, as well as Indigenous drama byWarwick Thornton,Beck Cole, andWayne Blair.[2]

In 2005, Dear joinedABC Television as executive producer of drama.[2] She was appointed acting head of drama after Scott Meek left, and appointed to the role of ABC head of drama in March 2007.[5] In this role she executive produced many successful drama and comedy series, includingRake andThe Librarians. She also commissioned feature films, includingSamson & Delilah andBran Nue Dae, and series such asThe Slap andThe Straits, among others.[2]

In 2010, she joined Blackfella Films as a producer and head of drama, where she stayed until 2020.[8] There she co-produced many films and series withDarren Dale.[9] In 2019 she was co-creator, withRachel Griffiths and Darren Dale, ofTotal Control, and co-produced series 1.[10][11]

Other activities

Dear was one of three judges at the 2006 My Queer Career short film festival.[3]

In 2017, she was on the jury at theAdelaide Film Festival.[12]
