TheMinister for Victims and Community Safety is aJunior ministerial post in theScottish Government. As a result, the minister does not attend theScottish Cabinet.[2] The post was created in May 1999 during the1st Scottish Parliament as theDeputy Minister for Justice. Deputy ministers were renamed ministers after the election of theScottish National Party in 2007. The minister reports to theCabinet Secretary for Justice and Home Affairs, who has overall responsibility for the portfolio, and is a member of cabinet.[3]

History

From 1999 to 2007 responsibility for Community Safety rested with theMinister for Justice and theDeputy Minister for Justice. TheSalmond government, elected following the2007 Scottish Parliament election created the junior post of theMinister for Community Safety who assists theCabinet Secretary for Justice, in theScottish Justice Department. After the2011 Scottish Parliament election the post was renamedMinister for Community Safety and Legal Affairs and was given additional responsibilities for tackling sectarianism. It was renamed again to simplyMinister for Community Safety in June 2018.[3]
