Mike Bauer (born June 29, 1959) is a retired American tour professionaltennis player. Bauer won three singles and nine top-tier doubles titles during his career.[1] He reached a career high singles ranking of world No. 29 in November 1984.[2]
An All-American in 1981 atUniversity of California, Berkeley, Bauer won the 1982Bangkok Grand Prix and 1982 and 1983South Australian Open. He was also a finalist at the 1983Sydney Outdoor Grand Prix. He reached the semi-finals in five other tournaments during his career.[2] His bestGrand Slam result was reaching the 3rd round ofWimbledon in 1983 where he lost to eventual finalistChris Lewis. He reached the second round of theU.S. Open twice in four tries.
Bauer reached a career high doubles ranking of world No. 25,[3] and won the 1981Taipei Grand Prix andManila Grand Prix, and 1982 Bangkok Grand Prix, tournaments partnering compatriotJohn Benson, the 1983Stuttgart Outdoor partneringAnand Amritraj and Sydney Outdoor partneringPat Cash, the 1992Tel Aviv Grand Prix partneringJoão Cunha e Silva, the 1993Casablanca Grand Prix partneringPiet Norval, andSantiago Grand Prix with Rikl, and the 1994Vienna Grand Prix again with Rikl.[1] He was a finalist at the 1983Maui Grand Prix partneringScott Davis and 1984Melbourne Grand Prix partneringScott McCain,[2] 1993Zarazoga Grand Prix partneringDavid Rikl,Gerry Weber Open withMarc-Kevin Goellner, Tel Aviv partnering Rikl, and Vienna withDavid Prinosil.[1]
Bauer was a member of the AmericanDavis Cup team. Mike graduated from Miramonte High School in Orinda, California. He is the former Director of Tennis atHarbor Bay Club inAlameda, California. He regularly gave private lessons and directed the Summer Tennis Camp program. He now lives in Germany with his family.
