Brazilian photographer, painter, and filmmaker
Miguel Rio Branco (born 1946) is a Brazilian photographer, painter, and filmmaker (director and cinematographer).[ 1] His work has focused onBrazil and included photojournalism, and social and political criticism.[ 2]
Rio Branco was an Associate Member ofMagnum Photos . His photographs are included in the collections of theMuseum of Modern Art andMetropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Rio Branco was born inLas Palmas ,Gran Canaria , in theCanary Islands .[ 3] [ 4] His parents were diplomats and he spent his childhood inPortugal ,Switzerland ,Brazil and theUnited States .[ 1] In 1976 he moved toNew York City , where he earned aBA , and took a one-month vocational course at theNew York Institute of Photography .[ 1] In 1978, he moved toRio de Janeiro and studied at the Industrial Design College.[ 1]
He became an Associate Member ofMagnum Photos in 1980.[ 3] He lives and works in Rio de Janeiro.[ 2]
