Microsoft Host Integration Server (a.k.a. HIS) is agateway application providing connectivity betweenMicrosoftWindows networks andIBMmainframe andIBM i systems. Support is provided forSNA,3270 (standard andTN3270),5250 (standard andTN5250),CICS,APPC, and other IBMprotocols. Support is also provided for advanced integration with Windows networks and software, such as linkingMicrosoft Message Queuing applications toIBM WebSphere MQ, bindingMicrosoft DTC transactions with CICS, and cross-protocol access toDb2 databases on IBM platforms.

HIS is the successor toMicrosoft SNA Server. SNA Server was released in 1994, and was one of the first add-on products available for the fledglingWindows NT. SNA Server was also included inMicrosoft BackOffice Server.

Similar gateway products were NetWare for SAA (defunct, ran onNovellNetWare) and IBM Communications Manager/2 (defunct, ran onOS/2).

HIS has an active ecosystem of third-party hardware (e.g.network adapters supportingESCON andTwinax connectivity) and software.[2]
