The species now placed inMicroptilotis were formerly placed in the genusMeliphaga. Whenmolecular phylogenetic studies found thatMeliphaga contained two distinct clades, the genus was split and many of the species transferred to the resurrected genusMicroptilotis.[3][4][5]
