
Michelsen Island is a small island in theSouth Orkney Islands offAntarctica. It is joined to the southern end ofPowell Island by a narrowisthmus of occasionally submerged boulders. The island was first observed and roughly mapped in 1821 by CaptainsGeorge Powell andNathaniel Palmer. It was named on a map by CaptainPetter Sørlle, a Norwegianwhaler who made arunning survey of the South Orkney Islands in 1912–13.[1]
The island lies within anAntarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA 111). It is also part of the Southern Powell Island and adjacent islandsImportant Bird Area, identified as such byBirdLife International because it supports significantseabirdbreeding colonies.[2]
