American executive, software developer, and open source proponent
Michael Tiemann at MySQL Conference 05 in 2005Michael Tiemann is an American software developer and executive, serving[when?] as vice president ofopen source affairs atRed Hat, Inc.,[1][2] and former President of theOpen Source Initiative.[3]
He earned abachelor's degree from theMoore School of Electrical Engineering in 1986 at theUniversity of Pennsylvania.[4]
He co-foundedCygnus Solutions in 1989.[5][6] His programming contributions tofree software include authorship of theGNU C++ compiler and work on theGNU C compiler and theGNU Debugger.[7] Tiemann is featured in the 2001 documentaryRevolution OS.[8] Opensource.com profiled him in 2014, calling him one of "open source's great explainers."[9]
He was the chief technical officer of Red Hat.[10] He served on a number of boards, including theEmbedded Linux Consortium,[11] theGNOME Foundation advisory board,[12] and the board of directors ofActiveState Tool Corp.[13]
