Michael Staffurth Stancliffe[1] (8 April 1916 – 26 March 1987) was an EnglishAnglican priest who served as theDean of Winchester from 1969 to 1986.
Stancliffe trained for ordination atLincoln Theological College, and wasordained deacon in 1940 and priest in 1941.[2] He was acurate at St James', Southbroom,Devizes 1940–1943 before becoming thepriest-in-charge atRamsbury 1943–1944, and then curate ofCirencester and priest-in-charge of Holy Trinity, Watermoor, Cirencester, 1944–1949.
He was then aMaster andChaplain atWestminster School 1949–1957 and also Preacher toLincoln's Inn, 1954–1957.[3] Following this he wasRector ofSt Margaret's, Westminster, aCanon of Westminster Abbey 1957–1969, andSpeaker's Chaplain 1961–1969[4] before his elevation to theDeanery ofWinchester.
He was a member ofGeneral Synod 1970–1980 and Chairman of the Council for Places of Worship, 1972–1975; Fellow ofWinchester College 1973.[4] He was also considered for the post ofBishop of Carlisle.[5]
His son,David Stancliffe, was theBishop of Salisbury.
