Michael Sarnoski is an American filmmaker, who wrote and directed the filmsPig (2021) andA Quiet Place: Day One (2024). ForPig, he received numerous awards and nominations.[1] His next film isThe Death of Robin Hood, with a release date not yet announced.

Early life

Sarnoski grew up inMilwaukee,Wisconsin in the United States and attended theUniversity School of Milwaukee.[2] After graduating in 2006,[3] he went toYale University, where he majored in art and film.[4]

Career

While at Yale, Sarnoski co-wrote and directed the short filmLove of the Dead, set in a zombie apocalypse.[5] Sarnoski metVanessa Block during the making of the film, and they later collaborated on the 2015 short documentaryThe Testimony, which Block wrote, produced, and directed while Sarnoski was editor and executive producer.[6] Sarnoski also directed episodes of the TV seriesOlympia andFight Night Legacy.[7]

Sarnoski wrote and directedPig based on a story by him and Block,[8] andNeon released it in theaters in the United States on July 16, 2021.[9] Sarnoski received theNational Board of Review Award for Best Directorial Debut and was nominated for theGotham Independent Film Award for Best Feature and theIndependent Spirit Awards'Someone to Watch Award andBest First Screenplay Award. He also received various nominations and wins from dozens of critics associations.[1]The Hollywood Reporter wrote thatPig "subverted the past decade’s uptick of revenge films, ending in an empathetic gesture and emotional appeal rather than a bang",[10] andCreative Screenwriting reported that the film "put Sarnoski on the map as a unique creative voice".[11]

In April 2022,New Regency hired Sarnoski to write and direct a film adaptation of the 2018 graphic novelSabrina.[1]

John Krasinski, who directedA Quiet Place andA Quiet Place Part II, approached Sarnoski to write and directA Quiet Place: Day One after another director,Jeff Nichols, exited due to creative differences with Krasinski.[10] Sarnoski wrote the screenplay based on a story by him and Krasinski and directed the film.Paramount Pictures releasedA Quiet Place: Day One in theaters globally in late June 2024.[12]

Also in 2024, Sarnoski began development on the filmThe Death of Robin Hood, based on the legendary outlawRobin Hood, with production to begin in February 2025.[13] In April 2025, while in post-production forThe Death of Robin Hood, Sarnoski signed on to write and direct a live-action film adaptation of the video gameDeath Stranding.[14] By the following September, the film was in active development.[15]
