Masatsugu Nakazawa (中澤 公胤,Nakazawa Masatsugu; born October 8, 1975),[4] better known by thering nameMichael Nakazawa (中澤マイケル,Nakazawa Maikeru), is a Japaneseprofessional wrestler andjudoka signed toAll Elite Wrestling (AEW).[5]

Early life

Nakazawa attendedTokai University before studying abroad in the United States where he obtained anMScSports Science at theUnited States Sports Academy (USSA) Graduate School.[6] Nakazawa's father, Kazunari Nakazawa, is an associate professor atTokai University and director of theAmerican football club.

Professional wrestling career

Nakazawa is best known for his tenure withDDT Pro-Wrestling where he is a formerKO-D Tag Team Champion (withKenny Omega),Jiyūgaoka 6-Person Tag Team Champion andDDT Extreme Champion.[7] Throughout his career he has also wrestled forNew Japan Pro-Wrestling,[8]Michinoku Pro,Big Japan Pro Wrestling andAll Japan Pro-Wrestling. Nakazawa studied in the United States and is a fluent speaker ofEnglish. He often acted as an interpreter for English-speaking foreign wrestlers in Japan and through this relationship he met Kenny Omega, a now-Executive VP at AEW, with whom he has shared a ring 35 times, both as an opponent and as a tag team partner.[9]

All Elite Wrestling (2019–present)

Nakazawa was announced as a new signee ofAll Elite Wrestling (AEW) in early 2019.[5] He debuted atDouble Or Nothing, the promotion's inaugural event, taking part in a 21-manCasino Battle Royale. He was the first man to be eliminated by Sunny Daze.[10] The following month atFyter Fest, Nakazawa defeated Alex Jebailey in ahardcore match.[11] On the November 13 episode ofDynamite, Nakazawa made his debut quickly losing toJon Moxley.[12] Following this, Nakazawa would mainly wrestle on AEW's secondary showDark, facing the likes ofShawn Spears,Trent Beretta,Matt Sydal and Mike Sydal in losing efforts.[13][14][15] On the January 20, 2021 episode ofDynamite, Nakazawa was seen inKenny Omega's house welcoming inThe Young Bucks thus establishing his affiliation with Omega in AEW.[16] He JoinedThe Elite on February 17. On the March 10 episode ofDark: Elevation, Omega set up a match between Nakazawa and Matt Sydal where if Sydal won, he would receive an AEW World Title Eliminator match against Omega. During the match, Nakazawa displayedvillainous tactics such as choking Sydal with hislanyard but he would eventually go on to lose the match.[17]
