Sir Michael John Llewellyn-SmithKCVO CMG (born 25 April 1939[1]) is a retired British diplomat and academic. He served asAmbassador to Poland from 1991 to 1996 andAmbassador to Greece from 1996 to 1999.[2] He isvisiting professor at the Centre for Hellenic Studies,King's College London.[3]
Llewellyn-Smith was born in 1939.[4] He was educated atWellington College, aprivate school inCrowthorne,Berkshire.[3] He attendedNew College, Oxford, where he studied classics, ancient history and philosophy.[4]
Llewellyn-Smith joinedHer Majesty's Diplomatic Service in 1970.[5] On 29 March 1980, he was appointedConsul-General atAthens.[6]
Following retirement, Llewellyn-Smith has spent his time writing and lecturing about Greek history and culture.[5] He isvisiting professor at the Centre for Hellenic Studies,King's College London.[3] He is a regular speaker onSwan Hellenic cruises.[5]
On 25 March 1996, Llewellyn-Smith was appointedKnight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO).[7] He is anHonorary Fellow ofSt Antony's College,University of Oxford.[3][8]
In 1965, he publishedThe Great Island: A Study of Crete. In 1973, he published the bookIonian Vision: Greece in Asia Minor, 1919–1922 on theAsia Minor Campaign. In 2004, he publishedAthens: A Cultural and Literary History. In 2021, he publishedVenizelos: The Making of a Greek Statesman 1864–1914, on the Greek politicianEleftherios Venizelos.
