Michael Kanin (February 1, 1910 – March 12, 1993) was an Americandirector,producer,playwright, andscreenwriter who shared anAcademy Award withRing Lardner Jr. for writing theKatharine Hepburn-Spencer Tracy film comedyWoman of the Year (1942).[1]

Born inRochester, New York, his first job was writing and acting inCatskills resort shows with his brotherGarson Kanin. In 1939 he was signed to a screenwriting contract atRKO. He married RKO co-workerFay Mitchell in 1940 and collaborated with her on many projects including the Broadway playGoodbye, My Fancy (1948) and the westernThe Outrage (1964), based on the Japanese filmRashomon (1950). The couple received anAcademy Award nomination forTeacher's Pet (1958).
