Nicolas Michael Angelis (29 April 1944 – 30 May 2020) was an English actor. He was best known for his television roles as Chrissie Todd inBoys from the Blackstuff, Martin Niarchos inG.B.H. and as the longest-running narrator of the British children's seriesThomas & Friends from 1991 to 2012, as well as several other products and media related to thefranchise.

Early life and career

Nicolas Michael Angelis[1][2] was born on 29 April 1944[1][2] inPaddington,London to an English mother, Margaret (née McCulla) (1920–1947), and a Greek father, Evangelos Angelis (1894–1959).[1] He was raised inDingle,Liverpool.[1] He trained at theRoyal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama,Glasgow, where he played roles in, among other works,Brendan Behan'sThe Hostage andThe Zykovs byMaxim Gorky. He was featured inBoys from the Black Stuff (1982) andG.B.H..

Angelis appeared in comedies such asThe Liver Birds (1975–1978) andLuv (1993–1994) and films such asA Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square (1979) andNo Surrender (1985). In 1983, he appeared at theRoyal Exchange, Manchester inHarold Pinter'sThe Caretaker. He was a villain in the revived television seriesAuf Wiedersehen, Pet (2002), alongside former fellowBlack Stuff starAlan Igbon. He narrated the British version ofThomas & Friends from 1991 to 2012, replacingRingo Starr.

He narratedJohn Peel's autobiography,Margrave of the Marshes,[3] which was broadcast onBBC Radio 4 in 2005. In 2006 he starred inFated, a film set in Liverpool, and in 2007 he appeared in episodes ofMidsomer Murders andThe Bill. In September 2011 he participated in theBBC Radio 4 programmeThe Reunion, talking with other cast members aboutBoys from the Blackstuff.[4]

Personal life

Angelis married three times. His first marriage, in 1971, ended in divorce.[citation needed] He married theCoronation Street actressHelen Worth in 1991, although they had been a couple since the mid 1970s.[5] They divorced in 2001,[6] following his much-publicised affair with the woman who would become his third wife, Welsh model Jennifer Khalastchi,[5] whom he married in 2003.[1] He and Worth remained friends.[5]

He was the younger brother of fellow actorPaul Angelis.[1]

Death

Angelis died from aheart attack at his home inThatcham,Berkshire on 30 May 2020, at the age of 76.[2][7][8]
