Created in the 1940s,Meyba is a sports brand from Barcelona, specialised in the manufacture of sportswear and swimwear.[1]

History

[edit]

This sports brand was established inTerrassa, by Josep Mestre and Joaquim Ballbé in the 1940s,[2] with its name coming from the founders' initial syllables.

After years of successfully creating shorts, shirts and shoes for the popular beaches ofBarceloneta, it was not until 1981 that Meyba became an internationally known. By signing an agreement withFC Barcelona to provide sports– and leisurewear, the dream of Mestre and Ballbé was about to come true.During the 10 years thatFC Barcelona wore Meyba apparel, the team won many prizes and honors. The team, with players such asMichael Laudrup,Ronald Koeman,José Mari Bakero and the youngPep Guardiola, will forever be remembered as "the Dreamteam V1". And Meyba, with its bold designs, daring use of colour and the Mitica M symbol, will likewise forever be remembered with them.

However, in 1994, the company fell intoreceivership, leading to its closure in 1997. It was then acquired by Pulligan Group, owned by Joan Canals.[3] In 2013, the brand rights were acquired by the Dutch brand Premium, which manages the brand rights ofJohann Cruyff.[4][5]
