TheMetropolitan Baptist Church, located at 151West 128th Street on the corner ofAdam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard in theHarlem neighborhood ofManhattan,New York City, was originally built in two sections for theNew York Presbyterian Church, which moved to the new building from 167West 111th Street.[3] The chapel and lecture room were built in 1884-85 and were designed byJohn Rochester Thomas, while the main sanctuary was constructed in 1889-90 and was designed by Richard R. Davis, perhaps following Thomas's unused design.[2] A planned corner tower was never built.[3]
In 1918, the church was acquired by the Metropolitan Baptist Church, a congregation founded in 1912 which was one of the firstAfrican American congregations in Harlem.[2][3] They moved to this building from the Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle at 120West 138th Street, which later became Liberty Hall, a focus of theBack-to-Africa movement.[3]
The church was designated aNew York City Landmark in 1981,[2] and was listed on theNational Register of Historic Places in 1982.[1]
Despite the split construction, thegranite-faced building,[4] which combinesRomanesque Revival andGothic Revival elements, holds together as a single design.[2] The building is two and one half stories topped by a tremendousslate roof shaped as a partial cone. The front facade features groups of stained glass, Gothic-archedlancet windows at various levels.[5] Thinfinialed towers are prominent on the west facade of the building.[4] The total effect is "handsome" and "monumental".[4]
