TheMesostigmatophyceae are a class of basalgreen algae found in freshwater.[3][4][5] In a narrowcircumscription, the class contains a single genus,Mesostigma.[6]AlgaeBase then places the class within its circumscription ofCharophyta.[1] A clade containingChlorokybus andSpirotaenia may either be added,[7][8][9][10][11][12] or treated as a sister, withChlorokybus placed in a separate class, Chlorokybophyceae.[13] When broadly circumscribed, Mesostigmatophyceae may be placed as sister to all other green algae, or as sister to allStreptophyta.[14][15][16]
