Mergellina (Neapolitan:Margellina) is a coastal district of the city ofNaples, Italy. It is located in the quartiere ofChiaia. It stands at the foot of thePosillipo Hill and faces theCastel dell'Ovo. Some people say the name derives frommergoglino, a local name for thesmew,[1] others believe it is a corruption ofMare Giallo ("Yellow Sea"), which would refers to when the sea turned yellow due to floatingtufa rock dust following an eruption of theVesuvius.[2]However, very likely the real origin of the name is fromLatinmare ialinum, which stands for "clear, transparent sea".[3]

The port also serves as a mooring for private pleasure craft.
