Mercedes Álvarez (born 18 December 1956) is a retired Cuban sprinter who specialized in the400 metres.[1]
She won the gold medal at the1974 Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships,[2] the silver medal at the1981 Central American and Caribbean Championships,[3] the silver medal at the1982 Central American and Caribbean Games[4] the silver medal at the1983 Central American and Caribbean Championships,[3] finished sixth at the1983 Pan American Games.[5] sixth at the1986 Ibero-American Championships[6] and seventh at the1988 Ibero-American Championships.[7] She also became Cuban champion.[8]
In the4 × 400 metres relay she won a gold medal at the1982 Central American and Caribbean Games,[citation needed] a bronze medal at the1983 Pan American Games[5] a gold medal at the1986 Ibero-American Championships,[6] finished fourth at the1987 Pan American Games[9] and won a bronze medal at the1988 Ibero-American Championships.[7]
