Mendelssohns (also known asMendelssohnsPDX,[1] orMendelssohn's) is a bar inPortland, Oregon. Established in 2022, theclassical music-themed business was named one of the best bars in the U.S. byEsquire in 2023.

Description

The classical music-themed bar Mendelssohns operates on Mississippi Avenue, in thenorth Portland part of theBoise neighborhood.[2]Willamette Week has described Mendelssohns as a "narrow, industrial space".[3] The bar hosts Operaoke (operakaraoke).[1][4] Among drinks are: the Red Mendelssohn, which is a blood-orangemanhattan named after the 1720Stradivarius violin that belonged to members of theMendelssohn family in the early 20th century[5] and inspired the 1998 filmThe Red Violin;[6] theBach Talk (Dirtymartini); and the I Play theFifth (tequila sunrise).[3]

Lisa Lipton opened the bar in June 2022.[2] It has been described as the city's first classical music-themed bar.[7] Mendelssohns was named one of the best bars in the U.S. byEsquire in 2023.[2][8]
